Décès de Richard H. MacNeal (1924-2018)

Le Dr Richard (Dick) H. MacNeal est décédé le 29 janvier 2018 à l’âge de 94 ans. 

Repères biographiques :

1924 : Naissance à Warsaw (Indiana)

1927 : Sa famille s’installe à Philadelphie.

1943 : Bachelor of Arts de l’Université Harvard "Harvard was the best, and I wanted to get away from home"

1946 : Il épouse Carolyn qui travaille à l'observatoire du Mont Wilson le 30 mai. Ils auront 3 enfants : Robert (1950), Bruce (1952), et Paul (1957)

1947 : Master of Sciences

1949 : Ph.D. ("The solution of partial differential equations by means of electrical networks") en ingénierie électrique de CalTech "The approach at Caltech was more precise, more engineering-oriented", Assistant Professeur jusqu’en 1955

1955 : Ingénieur chez Lockheed

1956 : Computer Engineering Associates à Pasadena

1963 : Création de MSC le 1er février avec Robert G. Schwendler (qu'il a rencontré en 1960 chez General Dynamics) , Arlyn Winemiller, Brad Millikan. Développement de SADSAM (Structural Analysis by Digital Simulation of Analog Methods) puis de GPSA (General Purpose Structural Analysis)

1966 : Appel d’offres de la NASA

1968 : Il visite les bureaux de Sud-Aviation à Paris. L'entreprise possédait le plus gros calculateur analogique du monde et avait travaillé sur le fuselage et les ailes du Concorde.

1969 : 1e version de NASTRAN (NASA STRuctural ANalysis). Introduction de DMAP (Direct Matrix Abstraction Program) pour faire ce qui n'est pas prévu

1971 : MSC devient propriétaire de MSC.NASTRAN

1979 : Décès de Robert Schwendler le 2 janvier

1985 : Il devient membre influent et donateur de la Idyllwild Arts Foundation  pour l'éducation artistique

1994 : Acquisition de PDA pour 56 M$ : MSC.Patran

1997 : Il quitte MSC (31 janvier) et devient consultant

2006 : Décès de Carolyn le 8 juin à Pasadena.

2018 : Décès le 29 janvier

1996 : Election à l’Académie Nationale de l’Ingénierie (NAE)

The engineering community owes him a debt of gratitude for the number of man-hours saved by his software achievements.
Dr MacNeal leaves behind 54 years of technical contributions to the global CAE community and a loving family and will be sadly missed.
His entrepreneurial drive to commercialize analysis technology has enabled thousands of companies in virtually every manufacturing segment throughout the world to significantly improve their products and shorten the development cycles.
